Ways to Support:

As you probably know, so many artists of different disciplines, like many other people around the world, are out of work as a result of the Covid-19. Performances, teaching artist residencies, and teaching studios have been shuttered. We’re all trying to find ways to generate income and every little bit helps. If you’d like to help support me and my family during this difficult time, please have a look at the various items I am currently selling online, from albums to etudes, to instructional videos. Not only will I be adding more items but I will also begin to add links to other artists and their work here shortly. Thank you for considering.

Online Lessons:

Doug Hirlinger teaching a studentI have moved my private studio online for the time being. I am teaching drums, vibes, and music theory via Skype, Zoom, or FaceTime (last resort). It’s been an adjustment, but we’re all getting used to it now. Please email me to schedule a lesson.

Educational Resources:

Beats with Code, Max Based Learning for Kids

I’ve developed a unique curriculum called Beats with Code which introduces students to coding and design concepts, computer science basics, acoustics, basic music theory, and media technology. The lessons revolve around a visual programming language called Max. Until now this material has only been taught in classrooms and in private lessons at my home studio. You will need to download and install Max for free before starting. No need to purchase a license right now, as a full-feature free trial lasts for 30 days. This video is the first of several to added here on a regular basis. Adults should give it a try as well! If you’ve wanted to start learning Max/MSP, nows your chance.

In video #1 of Beats with Code, Max Based Learning for Kids, we discuss the difference between Visual Programming Languages and Textual Programming Languages and then we jump right into Max recreating a simple tone generating web application originally written in Javascript. Along the way, students are introduced to the Max environment and several Max objects. Looking for something interesting and educational for your middle or high school age child to do while stuck at home? I’m now offering my Beats with Code Max/MSP based classes online. Get it here.

Rhythmic Ratio E-Pack

Doug Hirlinger's Rhythmic Ratio Ebook coverThe Rhythmic Ratio E-Pack is a fun and interesting tool for mastering various rhythmic ratios (polyrhythms). Ratios included in all sections are 2:3, 4:3, 5: 2 through 9, 7: 2 through 13, and all corresponding perspectives. (2:5, 3:5, etc.). The pack includes Rhythmic Ratio Ebook, play-along loops, 2-minute long play-along mp3’s for those without looping capabilities, rhythmic ratio ear training mp3’s, rhythmic ratio ringtones in .m4r format.

This book demonstrates two notations of each ratio from both “perspectives” and a third set of notations showing a common subdivision. Subdivisions are accented to demonstrate where one half of the ratio lies against the other. The ratios included here focus on 5’s and 7’s against 2-9 and 2-13 respectively. 3:2 and 4:3 are also included because they are so common. Get it here.

Recordings:

Man From Nowhere – Kora Song and Reconstructions

Album Cover for Kora Song and Reconstructions by Man From NowhereThis project began with a multi-track improvisation, Kora Song, with kora (first track recorded), melodica, fender Rhodes, wooden flute from Chinese department store, cymbal with no stand, small bass drum, and various shakers. Reconstructions were then created using the original audio from Kora Song and in some cases introducing new material. A second source of audio was created with the recording of Duo. Duo was a multi-track improvisation recorded with musician/artist Ben Gerstein. Additional reconstructions were created from Duo. Get it here.

All proceeds go directly to me and my family.
